In-house workshops can be arranged for you at your organisation, making our workshops more convenient and cost effective with no travel or hotel expenses for your staff.

As a guideline, our workshops are best suited to between 12 and 25 participants.  This allows for high levels of interaction and questions can be asked at any time.

All in-house workshops are led by Paul Drath, who has extensive experience of EU research programmes gained over the last twenty eight years.

The following workshops can be held at your organisation: 
 

Finance in Horizon 2020 (2 day or 1 day)

Horizon 2020 - the EU's research and innovation funding programme - was launched at the end of 2013. This workshop will explain the funding rules for the new programme, from budgets to eligible costs and from cash flow to audit. 

We offer a one or two day option of this workshop.  The two day is an extended version of the one day and will provide a greater level of detail.

The workshop is aimed at finance and administration staff involved in EU research projects, with or without a background in earlier EU programmes. The workshop will consit of lectures and practical exercises, to be carried out in small groups with plenary feedback sessions.

The 2 day workshop offers:

  • More detailed explanations of personnel cost, time recording and productive hours for eligible cost grants, and of Marie Sklodowska-Curie action
  • Adds information on other direct costs, including large research infrastructures, specific unit costs and the SME instrument
  • Adds a section on EC audit processes, common mistakes in reporting and their financial consequences

 


 

Coordinating Horizon 2020 Projects

This workshop is aimed at project coordinators, managers and administrators of EU collaborative research projects. It will show them how to:

  • prepare for managing the project: establishing the rules and processes for decision taking, creating a quality process to check deliverables, use of management websites and email lists to support communication, draft a project handbook plus templates for meeting agendas and reports, deliverables, and partner progress reports
  • interact with the European Commission in submitting progress reports and deliverables, gaining approval and payment, preparing for technical reviews and amending the grant agreement
  • work with the consortium to keep the project on schedule, submit reports on time, transfer budgets and work, handle poorly performing partners, and control the EU cash flow

The workshop focuses on collaborative research projects in the areas of Social Challenges and Enabling and Industrial Technologies programmes of Horizon 2020.

Consortium Agreements for Horizon 2020

 A good consortium agreement can support effective project management and minimise risks to intellectual property rights (IPR). But what is a good consortium agreement? Should power to transfer budgets between partners rest with an elected board, or with a general assembly of all partners? Should affiliates have free access to the IPR generated in the project? Which takes priority: academic publication or commercial confidentiality? Should EC payments be distributed immediately, or only on proof of work done?

This workshop will explain the main features and options for consortium agreements for collaborative projects in Horizon 2020. It will compare various model consortium agreements and will cover the major terms of the EC grant agreement, which provides the context.

The workshop is aimed at those negotiating consortium agreements: research managers, advisors and contracts staff.

Horizon 2020: Developing Winning Proposals (Newcomer or Intermediate)

A winning proposal starts with firm foundations: the right topic, a practical workplan, and a consortium that can deliver not only the scientific results but also impact on society or the economy.  This workshop will give you a comprehensive insight into how to establish the foundations for a successful proposal.

The workshop will start with the evaluation process and criteria, the chief financial conditions including viability checks and guarantees, and rules on intellectual property rights.  The main part of the day will focus on the proposal itself, showing how a well designed project and consortium will meet the evaluation criteria.  Examples from real proposals will illustrate good and bad practise in presenting bids. 

The workshop is aimed at researchers, research managers and advisors who are either new to EU research funding or have had some introduction to H2020 and now need to understand the full requirements.

This workshop is offered at two levels: Newcomers or Intermediate and can be extended to a second day for evaluating proposal ideas or draft proposals. This is conducted one-to-one with individual proposers, typically in 30 or 60 minute sessions.
